The raw 35% gap is mostly job size, not the board. Hardie jobs are typically stucco-plus-siding accents at about 1,000 sq ft; LP jobs are full-siding homes near 3,000 sq ft, and efficiency climbs steeply with size because mobilization, scaffold access and layout are paid once per job. Compared within the same size band, Hardie is at parity on small jobs and 6 to 30 percent behind on mid and large ones.

The index divides each job's sq ft per crew-hour by the median for its brand and size band, then takes the group median. It removes the job-size effect so a crew that only gets small accent jobs is not penalized.

32 crews qualify; the middle of the table is in the CSV. Two now-inactive crews rank above everyone on crew-hours but have no headcount on file: Amilcar Sosa (102 jobs, index 2.01, one-day jobs) and Rigoberto Sierra-Arias (30 jobs, 2.27). Per person, Hilton Medina's three-man crew is the standout at 33 sq ft per man-hour, roughly 2.5× the Hardie median. Armando Segundo-Garcia's 8-person headcount and 3.6 sq ft per man-hour look like a roster problem rather than a crew problem.

Meritage and Fieldstone homes sit open six to seven days against a 2.5-day norm; Toll Brothers four. Those are the builders where sequencing with other trades, not crew speed, is most likely eating the hours. Visionary combines slow jobs with the highest pay per sq ft.

Board and batten and 8¼" lap install at the same pace once size is accounted for. ColorPlus jobs sit open six days against 2.5, the clearest product effect in the data, though 158 jobs is a modest cell. Trim brand makes no difference. Buildings look faster only because they are big.

Big crews move the most wall per day; small crews are the most productive per person. LP held an index near 1.00 in every year while Hardie drifted from 1.12 in 2023 to 0.86 so far in 2026. Return trips cost the most of anything measured: 29% of Hardie jobs carry a second siding task, and those jobs run at two thirds the pace.

What this suggests

internal read
Hardie is not slower to hang; Hardie jobs are smaller and get revisited. Same-size comparison closes most of the gap, and return trips explain a large share of what remains. The 14% higher piece rate per sq ft on Hardie is the price of the small-accent work, not of the material.
Three crews set the pace on Hardie: Ortiz-Guevara, Medina and Portio. Medina's three-man crew at 33 sq ft per man-hour is the model for small crews; Ortiz-Guevara's nine-man crew for buildings. Segundo-Garcia's numbers need a roster check before anyone reads them as performance.
Meritage, Fieldstone and Toll jobs sit open two to three times longer than the norm. That is a scheduling and sequencing question for those builders more than a crew question.
ColorPlus needs its own plan. Six days on site versus 2.5 for primed board. If prefinished volume grows, staging, handling and touch-up protocol is where the hours are.
Watch the 2026 slide. Hardie efficiency is down about 20% from 2023 on a size-adjusted basis while LP is flat. Worth a look at whether it is crew mix, more return trips, or open-task hygiene.
